how to play hulusi and bawu, lesson 1 -------hold it.

you can hold it stand-up or seated.
normal hulusi has 7 holes, 6 are in front and one is back.
your fingers must be relaxed and bend naturally, like hold something.
and when your left hand or right hand three fingers are up, you can put your little finger on the pipe for hold the hulusi.
when the 7 note holes are open, you can use mouth and thumb for the fulcrums, and two little fingers keep hold hulusi placidly. put the blow hole in to your mouth gently
please see the video. and finger chart.

*if the hulusi have 2 drone pipes, when you open the drone pipe the short one make the note Mi (xxooooo)
the long one make the note RA(xxxxxxo)

if here is any question please let me know.
thanks very much
Lei

  1. I am wondering what the bottom three rows of the chart mean. Are those for different sizes of hulusi?

    1. No. those are different fingerings. basic fingering all holes closed = low sol. and all holes closed= re. and all holes closed = do

  2. no,it's three scales. for example if your hulusi is C key.
close all holes is SO, it's C major scale
close all holes is RE, it's Bb major scale
close all holes is DO, it's G major scale

    1. Hi,
in the book "How to play bowu and hulusi" Pat Missin editor, you can read when you close all holes if is RE it's G major scale and not Bb major scale. In all pages of this book G major scale start with RE and not DO, so if this book is correct are exchanged Bb and G in you reply. Can you confirm me? Thank you very much for help. :-)

  3. I have a Hulusi. Your instruction is the best I have seen. But I do not understand the comment above.

My friend bought it from China for me. She bought me an instructional DVD but it is in Chinese. The Hulusi seems to have plugs in the center flute. Should I remove these? The plug at one end is easily removed it is in a cap that sits over the outside. The top one will be more difficult.

I play bass guitar, piano etc. but the music with the DVD is not Western notation.
